I cannot talk about a few things but back in 2015 Edison Nation had a call for HoloLens apps and I came up with M.U.R.G.E.
Here is the original proposal.
In the book THE MASTER
SWITCH
I'm not interested in apps, I'm interested in the big picture, maximum
exploitation of HoloLens; how it will enable internet dynamics to be
overlayed on to real space, how this will affect the economy and
especially how to turn a geek niche product into a necessity.
When the internet went from tactical to practical it was easy to
forecast apps like Ebay and Youtube, but it was hard to see
cyberbullying, napster or making real $ by selling virtual stuff in an
MMORPG, nobody could foresee that we would be reduced to meme
processors, with HoloLens we will be meme processors but with our heads
up and hands free, and if you don't think that mobility makes a
difference...
MURGE
My friend Thomas worked for The New Products Showcase and Learning
Center, a museum of failed supermarket items, his job was to make a
virtual tour, it was quite a laborious task and it makes me wonder, if
this were an actual market would it matter where the products were
placed since they all suck? He had another job going around to Wal-Mart
stores to make sure YoCrunch yogurt displays were up to snuff, in the
real world packaging and shelf space matter - with HoloLens they don't,
and that's the disruptive part of MURGE, Thomas' job is also made
obsolete - with realtime telepresence or FPV streaming anybody with a
HoloLens can be a broker for anything, and thus we see the emergence of
"micro-employment".
Are you shopping with the Wegmans app enabled? You
may get an alert saying you get a free product just for taking a picture
of the same display Thomas drove 200 miles to look at.
MURGE is not an app per se, it is a combination of core functions and
tools intended to create one and many designer realities. MURGE proposes
its own business plan and economic model with disruptive consequences:
Pitting real space advertising against user-generated metadata,
undermining locality and speciality via FPV tutorials and livestreaming
(or body brokering aka GHOSTING), and leveraging and brokering HoloLens
capabilities.
3 Key Points
HoloLens users who enter MURGE or "MURGERS" get real world discounts on
products and services.
HoloLens will promote quality and integrity via transparency.
Virtual copies of real space will be more valuable than real space.
Venture capitalists say they want to be told a story of how my IP will
make them $, well, here are some scenarios (minimal prior art search,
sorry for any redundancy):
In MURGE I can not only add my own content to reality, I CAN ERASE
REALITY - think about it...see the kinect hack.
In MURGE a sign for a restaurant reads, THIS IS A SHITHOLE, out back
there's a man-sized rat puking on a dumpster - disappointed customer or
disgruntled employee? "Cort, show any reviews for this place." In MURGE
people tag everything, because as the saying goes, opinions are like
noses...The side of the building is covered in reviews, and ALL of them
are positive, "You gotta try the CURRY BURGER!" "Chelsea is awesome, tip
her well!" and such. So the sign reads what it does, and I see it that
way because I have enabled my friends' MURGE work to mix with mine, in
MURGE the sign actually has 241 different tweaks, and I can either see
it as it is or as it is in MURGE, kinda like the movie THEY LIVE but in
reverse. My friend, JoeBob tweaked the sign, curious I go inside to see
if he did anything else. A fella in the back was glowing, JB tagged him.
I give the gesture and a bubble appears over the guys' head, " I AM THE
MANAGER AND I BANGED JBs GF AND FIRED HIM ". OK, I don't care how good
the food is here, I have been cheated on and I'm not gonna support that
kind of behaviour.
In MURGE people get paid to fly drones by tilting their heads and
gesturing, the drones themselves are outfitted with HoloLens, drone
delivery via GPS had too many points of failure but people-flown drones
are a boon, with floated flight paths and intuitive flight controls
being a pilot is like being paid to be a bird. For fun, in MURGE all
Microsoft drones look like ninja cat unicorns.
In MURGE McDonalds is experimenting with an app where a virtual
character of your choice welcomes you, seats you and takes your order. I
chose Ronald but he was kinda creepy so I put a kitty face on him.
In MURGE I'm walking down the street, "JB tagged the building ahead."
Cort alerted me, again I enabled my friends work - OMFG! He has Godzilla
impailed on the Sears Tower, blood pouring down, washing away an army
of teddy bears. He actually paid $ to do this and the result is epic,
his work has 16,097 likes in one week, and for every like HE gets paid
(He and others would do it for free), why? He made people come to the
Sears Tower and they appreciate that. (Will explain the psychology /
details of this if MURGE is picked up) The first MURGER to actually map
that property entered into an agreement that is mutually beneficial for
the MURGER, MICROSOFT and the property owner (everyone gets a cut).
In MURGE I go into a store and enable its custom app, I get discounts
for turning on ads but I decline, instead I enable SALESMAN (optimal
route planner), BUY (self-checkout at the cart), WATCHMENOW
(surveilled/streamed shopping for "marketing" and security) and
GLOWMYSTUFF (shopping list items or search criteria-based tweaking where
any product is its own trigger image) . I automatically get discounts
because I make shopping alot easier for everyone involved. And of
course, DUDE (recognizes car door shutting and geotags my spot in the
parking lot, floating an indicator above my car in a sea of vehicles).
In MURGE cops get paid to stream their shift for integrity and
entertainment.
ECONOMIC INCENTIVE FOR MICROSOFT, MURGERS AND PRIVATE ENTITIES
In the book READY PLAYER ONE a plausible virtual world called OASIS has
influence in the real world, as any information age technology does,
vying for control of this world leads to less than utopian
consequences...
What we can learn from this and related sci-fi
(Brainstorm, Strange Days, No Imagination, The Matrix, the rash of early
90s VR flicks...) is that the same technology that frees humanity can
enslave it, its all a matter of who is in control. That said, my plan
guarantees that nobody has absolute power in MURGE, and all the current
backlash against tracking, snooping, biometrics and smartphone culture
can be resolved voluntarily if MICROSOFT is transparent about its role
and provides incentives to get people over their paranoia and privacy
concerns.
MURGE = Human-Agent-Based Geotagging/coding + Photoshop
Stage One -
MAPPING http://www.technologyreview.com/news/535596/high-resolution-3-d-scans-built-from-drone-photos/
This is no less than the recreation of as much of the biosphere as
possible, via MURGERS, who map or construct MURGE by continuously
creating a virtual tour as my friend Thomas did. Think about Google
maps, street view and photosphere, these apps have extreme value, now
imagine filling in that space with all the off-street, indoor, and
otherwise inaccessable regions of the biosphere. MICROSOFT will pay
MURGERS to map new areas, and if a MURGER is the first s/he gets to
co-own it.
Collectively MURGERS (with drones as well) will be able to do
what can't be done by a fleet of cars or volunteers. MURGERS don't need
MICROSOFT to "own" anything or map their own neighborhood for example,
but a MURGER can pay MICROSOFT for huge swaths of MURGE one might want
for _____. MURGERS will get paid to explore, they are homesteading and
claiming images in the name of MICROSOFT and in turn MURGERS pay to own
virtual real-estate.
Stage Two - THE PR BARRIER
We are fortunate to have had the inferior Google product come out first,
we got the term GLASSHOLE out of it. Without some friendly, well
intentioned PR move in the form of a killer app that nobody will
poopoo...HoloLens may never go mainstream, and again, my goal is to make
it NECESSARY, so how do you get people to get over their paranoia,
reluctance and resentment of being constantly watched, besides the
economic incentives mentioned? MICROSOFT will help 6.5 million Americans
who don't know anything about visual ads, and probably don't care about
privacy - the blind. There are a couple kinect hacks leading in this
direction but inferiour to what HoloLens can do.
SONARTHESIA - I'm no programmer but SONARTHESIA could very well be coded
based on neuromimetics. SONARTHESIA - the app for blind people.
Proximity sensing via object to sound conversion. The blind HoloLens
user has a range of options for range! "Cort, I want a 10 foot spread at
10 feet out, eyes, white noise" - for navigating the new house, "Cort,
12 inch spread at 12 inches out, fingers, tone" for navigating the
dinner table. In addition to this core function, the blind person can
enable text to voice.
Blind people may be the only population that would appreciate ads, at a
pure info level, so not only are the blind a great demographic for PR
purposes, they can beta-test certain functions passively, they can walk
down the street without people judging them or being offended.
Stage Three - Insert dys/utopian vision here.
